Wortley is one of the most historic villages in the Barnsley borough, an estate village grown around Wortley Hall, the Georgian mansion famously owned by the labour movement since 1951 and known as the Workers' Stately Home, with Wortley Top Forge down in the Don valley preserving the oldest surviving heavy iron forge in the world. Stone cottages, a coaching-inn heart and walled-garden grounds make it a destination as much as a home.
The hall's most celebrated bride changed medical history: Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, the brilliant Georgian letter-writer who married into the family, brought smallpox inoculation back from Constantinople and championed it against furious opposition, decades before vaccination was dreamed of. Her wit was feared across literary London; her cause saved uncounted lives; and her name, of course, was Wortley's own.
Wortley grew where two old highways crossed, and won its Thursday market charter in 1307. Its medieval St Leonard's church and its great hall, seat of the Earls of Wharncliffe, anchor the village, but its fame runs to iron and to legend. Wortley Top Forge, a water-powered ironworks worked since about 1640 and famous for hammer-welded wrought-iron railway axles, survives as a museum. And Wortley claims the highwayman “Swift Nick” Nevison, whose real overnight ride from London to York was later misremembered as Dick Turpin's.
Wortley is a historic estate village rather than an ordinary residential one: stone cottages and period houses around the old crossroads and the coaching-inn heart, estate and former estate properties tied to Wortley Hall, and a smaller number of modern homes, set among walled-garden grounds, woods and the Don valley. Much of it is old, much of it protected, and that shapes the work, the period and listed doors cannot take a modern composite slab, so the right course is a sympathetic British Standard mortice deadlock fitted to the original timber, with period windows given key-operated locks the same careful way, so the security is genuine and the conservation character intact. The handful of modern doors want a TS007 three-star anti-snap cylinder. Set among parkland, woods and lanes, Wortley is rural enough that the rear and the outbuildings matter as much as the front door: a locked, sound gate, secured back doors, and a Sold Secure padlock on garden stores, garages and the outbuildings these estate-village plots carry, with lighting on the dark lane approaches.
Historic villages like Wortley combine period and listed homes with rural surroundings, and both deserve serious, sympathetic security, British Standard mortice locks fitted to period timber, snap-safe cylinders on modern doors, and strong locks on barns, garages and outbuildings.
