Thurgoland stands on the high ground between the Don valley and Wortley in the south-west of the Barnsley borough, an old farming and wire-drawing village, the valley below powered wire mills for centuries, that today makes a peaceful base among lanes, woods and the Trans Pennine Trail. Its S35 postcode points south, but Thurgoland has always been Barnsley borough country.
The trail network saves its best party trick for Thurgoland: the old railway tunnel under the hill, re-lit and reopened so that walkers and cyclists now pass straight through the village's bedrock on the former line. Around it, Thurgoland keeps the feel of a working upland village, a proper green, a well-used cricket field and lanes that climb quickly to thousand-foot views.
Thurgoland was a centre of early ironmaking and wire-drawing from the seventeenth century, its mills strung along the River Don. Wire was still being drawn here into the early 1980s, and just downstream stands Wortley Top Forge, a water-powered heavy iron forge worked since around 1640, run for a time by the Spencer family of Cannon Hall, and now the only forge of its kind left in situ in the world. A trove of over a thousand glass photographic plates, taken in the village between 1898 and 1948, records how little daily life changed here until the 1950s.
Thurgoland is an upland farming-and-industry village: stone cottages and older houses around the green and the lanes, farms and smallholdings on the slopes, and modern family homes filling in among them, with woods, fields and the Don valley on every side. That semi-rural character sets the security need, because here the targets are not only houses. Farms, paddocks, sheds, garages, stables and the tools, machinery, quad bikes and oil tanks they hold all interest the kind of thief who works quiet country edges, and the lanes give the time and cover to do it. So robust physical security on the outbuildings comes first: a Sold Secure padlock and a solid hasp on sheds, garages and stores, sound and lockable gates, secured fuel tanks, and lighting on the dark lane-side approaches. On the homes themselves, the period stone doors take a British Standard five-lever mortice deadlock, and the modern homes' uPVC and composite doors want a TS007 three-star anti-snap cylinder in place of the basic unit they tend to carry.
Rural villages like Thurgoland are where outbuildings, tools, fuel stores and machinery need guarding as carefully as the house, heavy-duty padlocks and hasps, secure garages, snap-safe cylinders and British Standard door locks. For the borough-wide picture, see our main Barnsley locksmith page.
