Thurnscoe is well within Terry’s patch — he works the whole Barnsley area, and this town is very much part of it, along with neighbouring Goldthorpe, Bolton upon Dearne and Great Houghton. That closeness matters more than it sounds — when you’re locked out in Thurnscoe, a locksmith already in the area beats a firm dispatching from miles away. He knows the local housing stock too — the difference between a period-terrace mortice and a new-build anti-snap upgrade before the van even pulls up.

Thurnscoe is the northernmost of the Barnsley borough's Dearne Valley towns, an ancient township named in the Domesday Book that became a powerhouse of coal when Hickleton Main sank its shafts in the 1890s. Today it's a town of solid terraces and post-war estates with its own railway station, Phoenix Park rising on the old colliery land, and a strong, plain-speaking community identity.
The name is Old Norse, 'thorn wood', a thousand years older than the pit rows, and the old corner survives if you look: the medieval church tower among its trees, the hall farm beside it, a hamlet's worth of stone swallowed whole by the coal town that grew around it. That collision of ages, ancient and industrial side by side, is Thurnscoe in one street.
Thurnscoe was an old farming township recorded long before coal, but it was Hickleton Main colliery, sunk from 1892 and reaching coal in 1894, that made the modern village, drawing miners into rows of new terraces in the heart of the Dearne. The pit had its own celebrated brass band, part of the valley's rich musical life, and the actor Brian Blessed grew up in the area. With the coal long gone, the old colliery land has been reclaimed for nature and enterprise.
Thurnscoe's housing reads its history clearly: rows of solid Hickleton Main miners' terraces from the 1890s around the older core, large post-war and council estates spreading out from them, and a steady wave of new building, the Willow Heights development most prominent, three- and four-bedroom homes with PV panels and modern efficiency. The terraces follow the classic coalfield plan, a rear yard and back door onto a shared lane, and that lane, quiet, continuous, screened from the street, is where break-ins on these rows tend to come from. The fix is to defend the back as seriously as the front: a sound lockable yard gate, a kitemarked five-lever mortice deadlock on a timber back door, a TS007 three-star anti-snap cylinder where the door is uPVC. The post-war estates, many doors sharing one model, repay a consistent upgrade so a single weak cylinder is not every house's weakness. And the new-build homes usually leave the factory with a basic euro cylinder, the one part worth swapping for an anti-snap unit the day the keys change hands.
Towns like Thurnscoe, built in terraces with rear lanes, are best defended from the back forwards, locked gates, secure yards, snap-safe cylinders, while the new estates need their developer cylinders upgraded.
