Grimethorpe is perhaps the most famous colliery village in Britain, home of the Grimethorpe Colliery Band, the world-renowned brass band whose story inspired the film Brassed Off after the pit closed in 1993. Three decades of regeneration have transformed the village in the north-east of the Barnsley borough, with new housing, the Park Springs business areas and fast Dearne Valley Parkway links, while the band plays on as the village's pride.
Grimethorpe has a literary footnote too: Orwell came here in March 1936 while gathering material for The Road to Wigan Pier, and went down the pit himself, the crawl along the low roadways left the six-foot author battered, and the pages he wrote helped show comfortable England what coal really cost. The village he described has been remade since, but the book keeps its place in the story.
Few small villages are known the world over, but Grimethorpe is. Its colliery band, formed in 1917 from the disbanded Cudworth Colliery Band, won the National Championship at the Royal Albert Hall in 1992 just four days after the pit itself closed, the bittersweet story that inspired the film “Brassed Off”, shot in the village. The colliery, once among Britain's deepest, was a flashpoint of the 1984–85 strike; by 1994 Grimethorpe was called the poorest village in Europe, before distribution centres and new industry on Park Springs turned it round.
Grimethorpe is a village remade, and its housing shows the two ends of that story side by side: rows of former miners' terraces from the colliery years, and large stretches of modern new-build raised during three decades of regeneration around the village and the Park Springs scheme. The security need spans both. The older terraces follow the coalfield plan, a rear yard and back door onto a shared lane out of sight of the street, so the back is the priority: a lockable yard gate, a kitemarked British Standard mortice deadlock on a timber back door, an anti-snap TS007 three-star cylinder where it has gone to uPVC. The new-build homes look secure and often are not quite, because the euro cylinder a developer fits as standard is usually the basic, snappable kind, the first thing worth upgrading to an anti-snap unit. Whatever the age of the house, the essentials are identical: hardware that meets a recognised standard, used every time, on front and back alike.
Regenerating villages like Grimethorpe set brand-new estates beside older terraces, and the essentials are identical across both, snap-safe cylinders, British Standard locks, secure gates and outbuildings, with the new-build's basic developer cylinders the first upgrade.
