Bowling is one of Bradford's oldest townships, its name in the records centuries before the city existed in any modern sense, and its great survivor still standing: Bolling Hall, a part-medieval manor that is among the oldest buildings in the city and now a much-loved museum. Around it, East Bowling's terraced streets and Bowling Park's green slopes tell the district's Victorian story, with the city centre only a short walk away.
The township's iron once armed the empire, the great Bowling works cast cannon and plate whose quality was a byword through the Victorian wars — and the gentler legacy is the park: terraced walks, the conservatory's glasshouses and avenue limes laid out where the city's first gentry once kept their orchards.
Bolling Hall holds the city's most famous legend. After the Battle of Adwalton Moor in 1643, the Royalist commander the Earl of Newcastle made the hall his headquarters during the siege of staunchly Parliamentarian Bradford, and is said to have meant to put the town to the sword. The story goes that a ghostly “White Lady” appeared at his bedside through the night, imploring him to “pity poor Bradford” — and that, unnerved, he spared the town. The tale has been told at the hall ever since.
Bowling is one of the oldest townships in the city, but its everyday housing is solidly Victorian: terraced streets around East Bowling and the park, a high proportion of them back-to-backs and through-terraces built for the workers of the great Bowling ironworks, with purpose-built flats and newer apartments mixed in closer to the centre. The terrace layouts set the security pattern, and there is a Bowling-specific twist: the back-to-back, very common here. A back-to-back has only one external face, a single front door, often opening straight onto the street, which makes that one door the entire defence, so a worn lock on it is the whole vulnerability, best answered by a British Standard mortice deadlock or a TS007 three-star anti-snap cylinder. The through-terraces do have a rear yard and back door, and these, along with cellar entrances, of which this old district has many, are routinely left under-secured behind a flimsy bolt while all the attention goes on the front. Bringing the back door, the yard gate and the cellar hatch up to front-door standard is quick and inexpensive, and closes the gap that most break-ins on these streets actually exploit.
Dense terraced streets like Bowling's see heavy passing traffic, and back-to-back and through-terrace layouts often leave rear doors and cellar entrances under-secured, the gap most break-ins exploit. Sorting those weak points is quick and inexpensive; our Bradford locksmith page covers the approach we take across the city.
